PPC Concrete Products is here to provide the answers you may be looking for whilst giving you an insight into the quality concrete options we supply. Our supplies are fit for purpose for a variety of construction needs.
The demand for construction is only increasing, on a private and industrial level. Whichever side you fall into, one of our concrete products could be the building block to successes you are looking for, and generally provide no issues with building regulations, not to mention being safe to use.
What makes a forklift block unique?
Forklift blocks, unlike regular concrete blocks, are specially designed to be lifted with a forklift. This allows for a smoother and efficient method of transport and placement of the blocks on the construction site. In general, most forklift blocks will have grooves at the bottom of the block which are specially made for the forks of the forklift to be placed within.
Depending on the provider of your blocks, they may have their own unique features. For example, with PPC concrete products, our blocks can come with an interlocking feature. This allows blocks, when placed in a certain way, to interlock with each other.
This is achieved by aligning studs at the top of a block, to recesses at the bottom of the block that will be stacking over. When placed correctly, this creates a lasting and secure hold which does not require any binding materials to reinforce.
As a result of this method of connection, in addition to the convenience of using a forklift block, you are presented with a process that can significantly reduce operation time on site. Forklift blocks can be used to facilitate the creation of a variety of structures in a quicker fashion, with far less manual labour and people on site.
Can a forklift damage a forklift block?
In some cases, yes, a forklift has the capacity to damage a forklift block. But this is no easy feat. Forklift blocks are made from concrete, so it would require a significant impact from the forklift to damage the block.
In a construction setting, this can take place if the block is dropped from the forklift, or if the forklift crashes into the block at a significant enough speed. In most cases, the forklift will likely be more damaged than the block itself.
How to install and use concrete forklift blocks effectively
Concrete forklift blocks are essential tools for ensuring simple yet effective methods of construction. To maximise their effectiveness and longevity, it’s crucial to understand proper installation and usage techniques.
With that being said, the most important step is choosing the right forklift block for your project. When selecting concrete forklift blocks, consider the following factors:
- Load Capacity: Ensure the blocks can handle the weight of the heaviest load you plan to lift.
- Durability: Opt for high-quality concrete blocks that are resistant to wear and tear, weathering, and chemical exposure.
- Size and Shape: Choose blocks that are appropriate for your specific needs, taking into account the dimensions of the forklift and the loads.
Installation
1. Site Preparation:
Ensure the ground surface where the blocks will be placed is level and free of debris. Uneven ground can compromise the stability of the load. Consider the drainage conditions of the area. If necessary, implement measures to prevent water accumulation, as water can weaken the blocks over time.
2. Block Placement:
Position the blocks with the flat side facing upward to provide a stable base for the forklift. Place the blocks at an appropriate distance from each other to accommodate the load and forklift. With PPC forklift blocks, they can be secured upon placement via their studs and recesses.
Regardless, you should ensure the blocks are firmly seated on the ground and are not prone to shifting or tipping.
Usage
1. Load Placement:
When it comes to lifting the blocks, position the forklift forks directly over the centre of the load to maintain balance and prevent tipping. Never exceed the weight capacity of the forklift or the blocks. Overloading can lead to catastrophic failure. This can include significant injury to the operator, people in the vicinity, as well as damage to the equipment, materials, and site.
2. Lifting and Lowering:
When operating the forklift, lift and lower the load slowly and smoothly to minimise shock and vibration. Jerky movements can dislodge the blocks and cause accidents. So make sure you aren’t transporting at an unsafe speed.
3. Transporting:
Transport the load at a moderate speed to maintain control and stability. Make gentle turns to avoid sudden shifts in weight distribution. By travelling at a steady speed, it reduced the likelihood of unbalancing of the blocks if there is a need for an emergency manoeuvre.
4. Block Maintenance:
Regularly inspect the blocks for signs of damage, such as cracks or chips. Replace damaged blocks promptly to prevent accidents. Confer with the block provider to discern between superficial damage and damage that compromises the block’s structural integrity.
By following these guidelines, warehouse managers, forklift operators, and logistics professionals can optimise the performance of their forklift operations and minimise the risk of accidents.
Safety Operations When Using Forklift Blocks
Before Use:
- Block Inspection:
- Check for cracks, chips, or other signs of damage.
- Ensure the blocks are rated for the weight of the load.
- Verify the blocks are clean and dry.
- Forklift Inspection:
- Ensure the forklift is in good working condition, with no mechanical faults.
- Check the tires for proper inflation and tread depth.
- Verify the forklift’s load capacity is sufficient for the task.
During Use:
- Forklift Operation:
- Approach the load slowly and carefully.
- Lower the forks gently
- Place the forks into the specially made grooves of the forklift blocks.
- Raise the block slowly and evenly.
- Avoid sudden movements or jerky starts and stops.
- Drive slowly and carefully, especially when turning corners.
- Maintain a safe distance from other vehicles and pedestrians.
- Load Stability:
- Ensure the load is balanced correctly on the forks.
- Avoid overloading the forklift or blocks.
- Check the load for any loose items or shifting.
- Block Placement:
- Place blocks on a level, solid surface.
- Position blocks directly in the area required.
- Ensure blocks are evenly spaced and stable.
Removing blocks
Removing our forklift blocks requires patience and concentration. Due to their interlocking feature, in most cases, to remove our blocks, they may need to be removed in reverse order. So this means you start with the final block that was placed, and work in reverse. (This is if they are interlocked).
Additional Safety Tips:
- Operator Training: Ensure all forklift operators are properly trained and certified.
- Personal Protective Equipment: Wear appropriate PPE, including safety shoes, hard hat, and safety glasses.
- Workplace Safety: Maintain a clean and organised workspace to reduce the risk of accidents.
- Emergency Procedures: Have a plan in place for emergency situations, such as load spills or equipment failures.
