What kind of wall can concrete blocks make?

Concrete blocks are known to be helpful in the construction of many kinds of structures, one being a retaining wall.

A retaining wall is an essential structure that can optimise space within an outdoor area. Whether the wall needs to be tall, or small, retaining walls get the job done. Retaining walls can be built on almost any natural ground. Whether that is in a garden, a park, or by a public footpath or road.

Retaining walls should not be underestimated as a simple aesthetic feature. It can also be an essential safety inclusion for more natural beauty spots that are frequented. If there is a hill at risk of landslides, then a retaining wall being placed in that area could prove to possibly be a life-saving feature.

Practical benefits of a retaining wall also include…

  • Prevent soil from collapsing or eroding.
  • Provide protection for a building (e.g. if a house is located on a higher platform, and it is in danger of collapsing after a flood or earthquake.
  • Offer protection for your natural vegetation.
  • Improve the appearance of your garden landscape, which therefore boosts the value of your property.
  • Help create a seating area in your garden, which will be comfortable and relaxing.
  • Allows you to put raised planters on top of the retaining wall, which adds beauty and colour to your garden.
  • Help reduce run-off of water after storms.
  • Eliminate piles of dirt, debris, or sand, which look unsightly.
  • Help divert rainwater, which can be utilised in your home or garden.
  • Prevent sinkholes, which will damage your landscape structure.
  • Be used for flood control- as you can incorporate drainage pipes into the wall, for drainage and water control.

How to build a wall from concrete blocks

How to build a wall from concrete blocks

When it comes to building a simple wall, there’s a certain kind of concrete block that proves to be the most simple and effective solution, the Interlocking Concrete Block. Interlocking Concrete Blocks are concrete blocks that have the ability to be ‘attached’ when stacked upon each other.

This is accomplished by the built-in features of recesses at the bottom of the block, and the studs at the top of the block. When stacked correctly, these components meet and provide a sturdy and lasting hold.

As a result, Interlocking Concrete Blocks do not require cement to bind the blocks together. Once attached, it is almost impossible to dislodge the blocks without mechanical assistance. This guarantees a level of hold relative to using cement itself, without needing it at all.

How high can I build a wall with concrete blocks?

Our interlocking concrete blocks have the potential to have 5 blocks stacked upon each other. Our standard-sized blocks are 60 cm in height, with 5 stacked together this would equate to 300 cm, which is exactly 9 feet (2.74 m) & 10.11 inches (25.68 cm) high. This height is more than enough for applications such as a retaining wall and so much more.

Is it better to use bricks or concrete blocks for a retaining wall?

Is it better to use bricks or concrete blocks for a retaining wall?

In our opinion, our Interlocking Concrete Blocks are far more optimised to creating a retaining wall, rather than using bricks and cement. There are 3 key points that show how our concrete blocks are the superior option, which we will share below.

No need for mortar

As the name suggests, our Interlocking Concrete Blocks contain a key feature that allows them to attach to each other without the need for cement to bind them together. As opposed to bricks that have to be manually bound.

Our blocks interlock simply by aligning the studs at the top of the block, with the recesses on the bottom of the block stacked onto it.

The stability and strength of a bricked retaining wall is dependent on the foundations below it, its thickness and structural integrity. Although bricks aren’t lightweight by any means, they are nowhere near the weight of our interlocking concrete blocks.

The increase in weight means that our blocks have a lower centre of gravity, which is only expounded and spread once the blocks are interlocked. This results in a wall that is hard to topple over.

Quick and painless

Simply put, if you have the right amount of help and equipment, installing interlocking concrete blocks can be quicker than setting up a brick retaining wall from scratch. Factors like waiting for the cement to dry are out of the equation with our concrete blocks.
