5 Reasons Why Self-Builders Love Interlocking Concrete Blocks

For those conducting their own construction projects, interlocking concrete blocks can be a real benefit for a number of reasons.

In this blog, we will explore 5 reasons why self-builders love interlocking concrete blocks.

At PPC Concrete Products, we are here to provide solutions for your construction needs, from the person working their own part-time project, to commercial clients, and everyone in-between.

Can Interlocking concrete blocks only be used for big construction projects?

Can Interlocking concrete blocks only be used for big construction projects?

Not at all, interlocking concrete blocks have the capability to be used in small and large construction projects alike, whether it’s a temporary build, or a permanent fixture like a retaining wall.

Their usage is not limited, they can be used in industrial builds or something as simple as a structure in your back garden.

Do I have to collect interlocking concrete blocks myself?

This is dependent on the supplier you opt for. Suppliers like PPC offer to have your blocks delivered to you. This saves significant costs on your end for hiring transportation back and forth. This is crucial for self-builders and smaller scale construction projects.

How many people do I need at minimum to install interlocking concrete blocks?

(Assuming your interlocking concrete blocks are of the standard size) in some cases you can install interlocking concrete blocks entirely on your own if you have experience handling them via heavy lifting machinery.

If this is not the case, you would need a professional and experienced operator to lift and place the blocks, whilst you guide them wherever necessary. For larger or industrial builds, you would require more people, this is to ensure that:

  • Blocks are placed correctly
  • Blocks are placed in accordance with the construction plans
  • One or more heavy lifting machinery operator is used to install quicker.

5 reasons Interlocking concrete blocks are loved by self-builders

Interlocking concrete blocks are a sought after by self-builders due to their ease of installation, cost-effectiveness, durability, and much more. Here’s a look at the 5 top reasons:

1. Easy installation

This is arguably the biggest benefit for self-builders. Interlocking concrete blocks are designed to fit together precisely with studs and recesses, at the top and bottom of the blocks respectively.

This removes the need for mortar entirely in many applications, significantly speeding up the build process. Self-builders, who often manage their own labour or work with a small team, find the straightforward stacking method incredibly efficient, thereby reducing labour costs and project timelines.

2. Cost-effective

While the initial cost per block might seem higher than traditional bricks, the overall cost savings can be substantial. The reduced need for mortar, less labour due to quicker installation, having fewer larger blocks (rather than more singular bricks) and minimal material waste all contribute to a more budget-friendly build.

For self-builders looking to maximise their budget without compromising on structural integrity, interlocking concrete blocks present a compelling financial advantage.

3. Wide range of builds / flexible construction

Interlocking concrete blocks are incredibly versatile. They can be used for a wide range of applications in self-build projects, from creating robust retaining walls and foundations to constructing the shells of sheds, workshops, and much more.

With providers such as PPC, we provide interlocking blocks of varying sizes, making them perfect for many builds.

Their design also means they can be easily reconfigured, moved, or even disassembled and reused for future projects, offering flexibility that traditional construction methods often lack. This makes them ideal for temporary builds, and helps to contribute to a circular economy.

4. Strong and durable

Made from high-quality concrete, these blocks are inherently strong and durable. They are resistant to extreme weather conditions, including freeze-thaw cycles, and offer excellent fire resistance. Interlocking concrete blocks can withstand most impacts too.

This provides self-builders with peace of mind, knowing that their structure will be robust, long-lasting, and capable of withstanding the elements. Many interlocking blocks are designed to be load-bearing, making them suitable for structural applications.

5. Reduced need for equipment mostly

While heavy machinery is often required to lift and place the larger blocks, the actual laying process is far simpler. Self-builders can learn the techniques relatively quickly, reducing their reliance on highly skilled (and often more expensive) builders.

This empowers self-builders to take on more of the construction work themselves, further cutting costs and giving them greater control over their project. However, in some cases, it may be the safest option to use the services of a professional to place the blocks if lifting equipment is needed.

Can mortar be used with interlocking concrete blocks?

Although mortar is not needed at all with interlocking concrete blocks, you technically can use mortar to reinforce the hold between blocks. However, this would be impractical, as the connection is more than secure enough, requiring heavy lifting equipment to separate them.

In truth, using mortar would be a waste of resources, time and money, it isn’t recommended to use with interlocking concrete blocks.

How do you know blocks can disconnect with heavy lifting equipment only?

Purposely disconnecting interlocking concrete blocks is not a straightforward process, it involves having to remove the highest attached block, one at a time. Due to the immense weight of concrete, this isn’t something that can be done by hand.

Further to this point, the weight of the concrete blocks makes them incredibly difficult to topple over, meaning that the only feasible way to remove them is via heavy lifting equipment.

How are interlocking concrete blocks made?

How are interlocking concrete blocks made?

The manufacturing process for interlocking concrete blocks will vary between suppliers, so it is difficult to say what the defining method is. However, below is a general outlook on how it is done.

1. Mould preparation:

Special moulds, designed to create the specific dimensions and interlocking features (studs and recesses), are prepared. A release agent is sprayed on the inner surfaces of the mould to prevent the concrete from sticking.

2. Concrete mixing and pouring:

High-quality concrete, usually a mix of cement, aggregates (sand, gravel), and water, is prepared. This concrete is then poured into the prepared moulds, ensuring it fills all cavities.

3. Vibration:

The concrete is often vibrated during and after pouring. This crucial step removes air pockets (voids) from the mixture, which could weaken the block. The air rises due to the vibration, and results in a dense, uniform, and strong block.

4. Curing:

The filled moulds are left to cure. Curing is the process where the concrete hardens and gains strength. This takes time, varying based on the concrete mix and environmental conditions (temperature, humidity).

5. De-moulding:

Once the concrete has sufficiently cured and reached a certain strength, the moulds are carefully removed, revealing the finished interlocking concrete block.

6. Storage and transport:

The blocks are then moved (usually with heavy lifting equipment) to storage areas to continue curing and gain full strength before being transported to construction sites.
